Nobuo ONISHI

Born in 1968 in Ikeda Town, Gifu Prefecture. After graduating from Tokyo College of Photography, he studied under photographer and film director Seiichi Motohashi. He became independent at the age of 29 and started working as a freelance photographer. Around the same time, he began documenting villages across Japan submerged by dam construction, including Tokuyama Village in Gifu Prefecture, which was deeply affected by the country's largest dam project. His work also covers patients in long-term psychiatric care, the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake, facilities for people with disabilities, and traditional craftsmen, all centered around the fundamental theme of "food, clothing, and shelter." In addition to photography, he also produces documentary films. In 2025, he received the Japan Photographic Society Award. Currently, he is active in magazine serials, film production, and writing.
