Born
in 1934 in the Wakayama Prefecture. Studied British literature
at Waseda University. Entered the documentary Production Company
Iwanami Films in 1954. |

| Left Iwanami Production in 1962 to become a freelance filmmaker.
His directorial debut was in 1965 with A Face, a short film.
Established Higashi Productions in 1968 with TAKAGI Ryutaro
and produced the feature-length documentary Okinawa Islands
("Okinawa Retto"), achieving enormous acclaim. In 1971, received
the Newcomers Award from the Directors' Guild of Japan with
his first feature film The Gentle Japanese ("Yasashii Nipponjin").
His 1978 production A Boy Called Third Base ("Third") was selected
Best Film and Best Director of the year by the film magazine
Kinema Jumpo. |

| Since then, has continuously directed films produced independently.
His 1992 The River With No Bridge ("Hashi no nai kawa") about
the controversial issue of the Burakumin people received numerous
awards in Japan. His latest film The Village of dreams ("E no
naka no boku no mura") won him international acclaim: awarded
in more than 20 film festivals among which the Silver Bear at
the 1996 Berlin Film Festival, and the Grand Prix at the Ghent
and Amiens Festivals, it was successfully released in many countries
including France and the USA. |
