Director's Statement

An invisible Great Wall has been erected in today’s China. This sturdy wall blocks the flow of information among Chinese and from overseas, at the whim of the government.

The spirits of the victims of the Cultural Revolution and the Tiananmen Incident remain buried in China and around the world. Cultural figures and human rights activists who demand freedom of political debate, speech, and expression are still unable to return to their homeland. China is literally the largest producer of exiles in the world.

Who are these exiles, living overseas, unable to return home for decades? Why did they have to leave China? Why are they prevented from going home? How do these men and women view present-day China and the country’s future?

It is my hope that learning of the wisdom, character, perseverance, and enduring vision of these exiles will deepen all of our understanding of China.
